Wizard of Oz Adaptations Hoover

Most Hoover residents grew up being able to watch the Wizard of Oz every year near Christmas time on television. The Wizard of Oz is based on a book series by Frank L. Baum. While Alabama may have seen its share of Cyclones; as far as we know none of them have ever wisped anyone away to another land full of witches and talking animals. It could be that only tornadoes in Kansas have this ability. Either way, Hoover residents can escape to the Land of Oz through many different Wizard of Oz Adaptation that all have their own unique spin on Frank L. Baum’s classic book series.

Emerald City

Emerald City is the most recent addition to Wizard of Oz adaptations. This television series premiered on NBC on January 6th, 2017 and can also be seen on Hulu for anyone that wants to catch up on what they may have missed so far in the series. While the characters and realm are all based on the classic tale, this adaptation has a much darker interpretation of Dorothy’s visit to OZ and even the land of OZ itself. Dorothy is fulfilling a prophecy that could change every life in OZ.

Tin Man

This adaptation was a miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel. This miniseries takes an entirely original spin on the story and characters and is about a waitress named DG who gets pulled into OZ. DG has three missions in Oz which find her birth parents, retrieve her lost memories, and stop a sinister plot.

Wicked

Wicked is a musical adaptation of the Wizard of Oz based on the book series by Gregory Maguire that is performed on Broadway. This adaptation takes place before Dorothy arrives in OZ. It is told from the perspectives of the witches of OZ and explains how each witch finds her way. This is just one of the many classic fairy tales that Gregory Maguire has reimagined to allow “the other side of the story” to be told.

Oz the Great and Powerful

This film was created by Walt Disney to explain events that happened twenty years before Dorothy crash-landed her house in the Land of OZ. Oscar is a magician who meets three witches as he travels across Oz. There is chaos in OZ and Oscar is recruited to restore order. Oscar eventually becomes the Wizard of OZ, fulfilling a prophecy that he would bring order to the land.

The Witches of Oz

This adaptation is also a miniseries that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. It is about Dorothy as an adult living in New York City. She is a famous children’s book author where she writes about repressed childhood memories (of her journey to OZ). The Wicked Witch of the West shows up in NYC and Dorothy must find a way to stop her.
