Lace up your running shoes and get set for a highly anticipated annual race through downtown Birmingham. The 15th Annual Red Shoe Run Rockin’ 5K is set for March 16, and there’s still time to sign up for this event benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama.
The Race
The Red Shoe Run doesn’t require you to run. And it doesn’t require red shoes. You don’t even have to do the 5K – there’s a 1-mile fun run option that’s less taxing but still does a lot of good. Sign up for either one of these races and get a cool T-shirt to go along with your $30 or $20 registration fee (for the 5K or the 1-mile, respectively). The money itself goes to support one of Birmingham’s favorite charities, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama.
This year’s race route is new, taking you through some of downtown Birmingham’s hot spots and ending right outside the Ronald McDonald House. Then participants can enjoy the awards ceremony and post-race block party to celebrate their achievements.
Packet pickup is on Thursday and Friday, March 14 and 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ronald McDonald House, 1700 4th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35233. Walk-up registration begins the day of the race at 7 a.m. The 5K kicks off at 8 a.m., the 1-mile run at 8:10.
The Mission
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama seeks to lessen the financial and emotional burden of families while their children receive medical care in the area. With the goal of “Keeping Families Close,” the organization provides a home away from home for these families at the Ronald McDonald House. The group has also built Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa and UAB Women & Infants Center in Birmingham. The Happy Wheels Cart program helps by delivering snacks, books, toiletries, and more to those at Children’s of Alabama.
