Don’t Miss Out On Art On The Rocks

Don't Miss Out On Art On The Rocks
The Birmingham Museum of Art has kindly hosted its lively Art on the Rocks series for 15 years now, and the summertime soirees are still going strong. For one night each month, the museum hosts a live band in its courtyard, as well as a variety of other art-focused amusements throughout its halls.

When and Where

This month’s Art on the Rocks will be held at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Friday, July 12. The event will run from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets for museum members is $15, and $25 for non-members. The museum is located at 2000 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard, Birmingham, Alabama 35203. Guests must be 18 years or older to attend.

July’s Event

The next Art on the Rocks will be headlined by Durand Jones & the Indications, whose ‘70s soul-inspired style easily evokes the likes of The Impressions. In fact, critics charmed by the dynamic vocal interweaving of Aaron Frazer and Durand Jones have drawn similarities to Curtis Mayfield and Jackie Wilson. In addition to the performance, you can also expect a confluence of other art forms, from dance to interactive mural making. You may hear sound piped in by when Jones and company aren’t on the stage, and you’re more than welcome to take in the museum’s current exhibit, Ways of Seeing: Fashion.

Later this Summer

The party picks up again on August 9, when Art on the Rocks returns with music guest Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. Since the release of their first EP in 2005, the band has made appearances at Cochella, Bonnaroo, as well as TV shows like the Late Show. That’s quite a long journey for a career that began when Lewis first tried out a guitar at the pawn shop where he was working. Before and after the music, you can explore the scene to see what other treats the museum has in store. You may cool down in the lounge or contemplate how the Austin band’s sound complements the museum exhibition’s fashion theme.
